Departement du Var wanted to help their end users independently update their passwords in line with security policies, to cut down on the time and resources spent on IT support. Research has shown these costs can add up and be significant for organizations. Problems start when organizations create new, secure password policies that lead to end user confusion and a spike in helpdesk calls.
We asked Vincent Sueur, CISO, what drove Departement du Var to reach out to Specops. Vincent explained: “Users were systematically calling support for forgotten passwords. One driver was Microsoft’s native functionality wasn’t displaying a clear message when a user’s password didn’t meet a policy – they didn’t understand why their password was rejected, so they would call the helpdesk.”
The challenge was clear: Departement du Var wanted give users the autonomy to clearly see how to meet password requirements, and free up the IT team. Deciding they needed to try something new, the organization decided to engage Specops with involvement from their Cybersecurity and Infrastructure teams.
Windows wasn’t displaying a clear message when a user’s password didn’t meet a policy – they didn’t understand why their password was rejected, so they would call the helpdesk.
After a successful POC (proof-of-concept), the Specops Client was set up to provide end users with dynamic feedback at the password change screen. This lets them see in real time which criteria they need to meet Departement du Var’s password requirements, instead of getting a frustrating ‘password does not meet requirements’ message leading to a support desk call.
