Self-service encryption key recovery for BitLocker

Stockholm, June 19, 2019 – Specops Software announced today a new release of Specops Key Recovery. The solution now provides self-service key recovery for devices encrypted with BitLocker. This allows users to unlock their devices with multi-factor authentication, without calling the helpdesk.

“BitLocker is used by the majority of organizations running on Windows” said Lori Osterholm, CTO of Specops Software. “Self-service key recovery can reduce the number of helpdesk calls without compromising security.”

BitLocker lockouts can be caused by hardware changes or occur when working remotely. When a lockout is triggered, the user must call the helpdesk for a recovery password and use it to unlock their computer. Key recovery calls to the helpdesk are a signification support cost driver. According to Microsoft, it can take up to an hour to get a BitLocker recovery key from the helpdesk. These calls also have a negative impact on security due to the poor user verification methods.

As a self-service solution, Specops Key Recovery eliminates support calls by allowing users to help themselves with multi-factor authentication. The platform supports more than 15 identity providers, including those that already may be in use, such as Duo Security and Symantec VIP. This allows IT departments to extend the value of MFA investments to additional use cases.

“This is an important update to Specops Key Recovery, which also supports self-service key recovery for Symantec Endpoint Encryption,” Osterholm said. “Security and usability issues caused by device encryption is a growing concern, especially as encryption is mandated by regulatory bodies such as NIST and NCSC.”
