Specops launches self-service encryption key recovery

Stockholm – Specops Software announced today the release of Specops Key Recovery. The solution addresses the common occurrence of encryption device lockouts by enabling users to unlock computers encrypted or managed by Symantec Endpoint Encryption. Rather than calling the helpdesk for assistance, a user verifies their identity using multi-factor authentication and receives a recovery key to unlock their device.

Endpoint encryption solutions secure data when devices are lost or stolen by making the data unreadable to anyone without authorized access. Unfortunately, an authorized user can trigger a device lockout if they forget their password or when working remotely. The user will need to contact the helpdesk to get a recovery key. The helpdesk will typically use security questions for user verification, which are prone to social engineering. This process can be time consuming for the helpdesk and users, while also introducing security vulnerabilities.

“Endpoint encryption is an advanced form of data security, but it comes with a fundamental usability challenge,” said Lori Osterholm, CTO of Specops Software. “Encryption device lockouts related to forgotten passwords are common. We’ve developed a secure self-service key recovery solution that does not require assistance from the IT helpdesk.”

Recovery key calls to the helpdesk occur, on average, four time a year, take 15 minutes to resolve, and with a cost of $15 per call. This can drive IT support costs for organizations, in addition to the productivity loss related to user downtime. As a self-service solution, Specops Key Recovery eliminate this cost by allowing users to assist themselves.

Specops Key Recovery’s multi-factor authentication platform supports more than 15 identity providers, allowing organizations to move beyond security questions. When combined with the Specops self-service password reset solution, users can use the same identity providers to manage their passwords.

“Our multi-factor authentication platform is used by hundreds of organizations across the globe to secure self-service password resets and helpdesk user verification,” said Osterholm. “The introduction of Specops Key Recovery extends this powerful platform to encryption key recovery – closing the security gap and eliminating calls to the helpdesk.”
