Press release: Block 1 billion leaked passwords with Specops Password Policy

Stockholm, July 26, 2018 – Specops Software announced today the release of Specops Password Policy 7.0. The release introduces compatibility with Specops Breached Password Protection, a hosted service with a continuously updated list of 1 billion previously leaked passwords. The solution enables customers to comply with requirements from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

With Specops Password Policy, IT departments can prevent users from utilizing high-risk passwords including those comprised in a data breach, such as the HaveIBeenPwned list. During an Active Directory password change, passwords are checked and users are informed to change it at next login if detected on the leaked password list. This capability not only prevents users from utilizing banned passwords but also informs them as to why they cannot use the password.

“With billions of leaked passwords on the dark web, it is no surprise that they are the main source of security breaches. To that end, IT security standard bodies such as NIST and the NCSC recommend that IT departments block the use of previously leaked passwords,” said Lori Osterholm, Specops Software CTO.

Specops Password Policy, prevents the creation of weak passwords through a robust feature set that includes blocking the use of leetspeak, keyboard strokes, and dictionary words. The solution’s dictionary capability allows IT admins to create their own custom dictionary list or download any of the Specops provided lists. Now with the Specops Breached Password Protection add-on, they can block over 1 billion leaked passwords.

“Our continuously updated list of leaked passwords provides assurance and ease of use to organizations looking to secure their environments against password related attacks,” said Osterholm.
